Parlevliet & Van der Plas about to acquire activities

RELAUNCH SHRIMP COMPANY HEIPLOEG WITH LEANER ORGANISATION

ZOUTKAMP – January 28, 2014  Heiploeg B.V., the European market leader in the import, processing and sale of shrimps, will most likely relaunch its activities before the end of the day with a leaner organisation under the name Heiploeg International B.V.. The new firm will become part of the international fishing/ fish processing company Parlevliet & Van der Plas.

Approximately 300 people in Zoutkamp will still have a job as a result of the relaunch. This morning, the Court of North Netherlands declared Heiploeg's Dutch activities bankrupt. The company had been in financial difficulties for quite some time. The relaunch will not affect Heiploeg's clients.

Parlevliet & Van der Plas has its head office in The Netherlands and branches in Germany, the UK, France, Spain and Lithuania. The company was founded in 1949, when it began trading herrings in the Netherlands. Today, this family-owned company has 1.500 employees and operates its own trawlers all over the world. It is active in catching, trading and processing of many varieties of fish including herring, mackerel and cod.

Over the past few years, Heiploeg was suffering from a debt burden of € 130 million and has lost millions of euros. The company was insufficiently able to adapt the organisation and the costs to the changing market conditions. The recent fine of € 27 million which was imposed by the European Commission (which Heiploeg appealed against) increased the financial pressure further. However, even without this fine it became clear it would not have been possible for the company to continue in its existing form.

With its new organisation, Heiploeg International will be better able to respond to fluctuating levels of activity as a result of seasonality or economic climate. Across the board, the terms of employment at Heiploeg have been cut back and brought in line with the current market and similar companies.

Director Edo Abels regrets Heiploeg's bankruptcy but is optimistic about the new company's prospects: “Today, we have mixed feelings. We very much regret having to say goodbye to a large number of highly valued colleagues. The good news is that we can continue with the majority of our colleagues as part of the financially healthy and stable company Parlevliet & Van der Plas. We are pleased that we can continue to supply our clients and consumers will be able to enjoy our shrimps.”
